In payments
Processors and acquirers use merchant identifiers to associate payment activity with the correct processing relationship. A business may have more than one MID, and formats vary by provider.
In reconciliation
The MID helps finance determine which statement, settlement activity, fees, and deposits belong to which merchant account. That becomes especially important when an organization manages multiple merchant accounts or processors.
Example
An organization operates three merchant accounts. Each account has separate processing activity and deposits. Reconciliation uses the merchant identifier to keep those records associated with the correct account.
