In payments
The statement and bank activity do not initially appear equal, but another identifiable payment record accounts for the difference.
In reconciliation
A difference does not automatically mean something is wrong. Identifying the offset separates explainable payment activity from items that require investigation.
Matched
The statement activity and bank activity agree.
Offset
A difference exists, but related activity explains it. A reserve hold, processing fee, chargeback, refund, or adjustment might account for the gap.
Exception
A difference remains without a confirmed explanation. This is where finance review is required.
Example
A bank deposit is $500 lower than the associated settlement. The processor statement shows a $500 reserve hold for the same period. The difference is Offset because the related activity explains it.
